Sona Privacy Policy
Last Updated: July 08, 2026
Welcome to Sona, a voice-first journal and diary app that turns your spoken words into beautiful, first-person journal entries, tracks your moods, and gently reflects your patterns and growth back to you.
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use Sona ("Service").
By using Sona, you agree to this policy.
1. Information We Collect
-
Information You Provide:
Journal entries (voice or text), mood selections, tags, answers to guided journeys/prompts, questions you ask your journal, and feedback you submit through the app.
Your speech is transcribed to text on your device; the resulting text — not the audio recording — is what the app processes and stores.
-
Automatically Collected Information:
Device type, operating system, app version, usage statistics, feature interactions (e.g. voice journaling, mood tracking, Year in Pixels, streaks), crash logs, approximate location (country-level), IP address, and analytics data.
-
Generated Content:
AI-written journal entries, mood insights, gentle reflections, and answers generated when you ask your journal a question.
-
Payment Information:
Subscription and in-app purchase data are handled securely by the App Store.
We do not store credit card or payment details.
2. How We Use Your Information
- To turn your spoken words into written, first-person journal entries in your own voice and language.
- To track and visualize your moods over time, including daily, weekly, and Year in Pixels views.
- To generate gentle, honest reflections and insights after each entry.
- To power "Ask your journal," so you can search and get answers from your own past entries.
- To support streaks, guided journeys, and reminders that help you build a daily journaling habit.
- To improve transcription accuracy, reflection quality, and overall app performance.
- To manage subscriptions, usage limits, and premium features.
3. AI Processing of Your Entries
Sona uses artificial intelligence to turn what you write into a finished journal entry, to generate mood insights and reflections, and to answer questions about your journal. So you know exactly what happens:
-
What is sent: only the text of the entry you choose to create (your speech is transcribed to text on your device — the audio is never uploaded), together with its mood and topic tags. Ordinary browsing of the app sends nothing to AI.
-
Who it is sent to: the text is transmitted over an encrypted (TLS) connection to our server, which forwards it to our third-party AI provider xAI (Grok). If Grok is temporarily unavailable, the text may instead be processed by Google (Gemini) or Meta (Llama). These providers act as our service providers and process the text only to return the requested result.
-
Your permission: no entry text is sent to any AI provider until you grant permission in the app. You can withdraw permission at any time in Settings → "AI & your data," after which no further entry text is sent and AI features are disabled while your existing journal stays on your device.
-
Protection: this data is not sold and is not used for advertising. We require our AI providers to protect it under confidentiality and data-protection terms consistent with this policy, and not to use it to train their models where such controls are available to us.
4. Voice & Journal Data Handling
- Speech is transcribed to text on your device; only text is processed to deliver requested features (journal-entry generation, mood analysis, reflections). The audio recording is not uploaded.
- Journal entries may be stored so you can review, edit, and revisit past entries.
- We do not use your journal content to identify you personally.
- We do not sell or share your journal entries for advertising purposes.
- Your journal is private by design — entries are only accessible to you within your account.
5. Third-Party Services
Sona relies on the following third-party services to operate:
-
AI Language Providers — xAI (Grok) (primary), with Google (Gemini) and Meta (Llama) as fallbacks — used to turn your entry text into first-person journal entries, generate mood insights and reflections, and answer questions about your journal. See
xAI Privacy Policy,
Google Privacy Policy, and
Meta Llama Use Policy.
-
Analytics & Messaging (Google Firebase) — collects anonymized usage/crash data and delivers notifications to improve stability and experience.
Privacy Policy
-
Advertising (Google AdMob) — used to show ads to non-subscribers. You can limit ad personalization via your device settings.

Each third-party service operates under its own privacy policy.
6. Data Storage and Security
- All data is encrypted in transit and at rest using industry-standard security measures.
- Your journal entries and mood data are stored only as long as necessary for functionality, or until you delete them.
- You can delete individual entries, your mood history, or your entire account at any time.
- We regularly review and update our security practices.
7. Your Rights and Choices
- AI Consent: Grant or withdraw permission for AI processing at any time in Settings → "AI & your data."
- Access & Deletion: View or delete your journal entries and account data directly in the app or by contacting us.
- Language Control: Choose the language Sona uses to write and reflect on your entries.
- Subscription Control: Manage or cancel your Sona Premium subscription anytime via your Apple ID account settings.
- Microphone Permissions: You can disable microphone access at any time in your device settings.
A note on wellbeing: Sona is a private space to hear yourself think and track your moods over time. Sona isn't therapy and doesn't replace professional mental health care. If you're struggling, please reach out to a licensed professional or a crisis helpline in your area.
8. Children's Privacy
Sona is intended for users aged 13 and older.
We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13.
If such data is discovered, it will be deleted promptly.
9. International Data Transfers
Your data may be processed on secure servers located in different countries, including by the AI providers named above.
We comply with applicable data protection regulations, including GDPR and similar laws.
10. Updates to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect new features or legal requirements.
Any changes will be posted here with an updated "Last Updated" date.
